Homeowners can make their interior design decisions easier by not having to think of different flooring options for each and every room. Instead, they could fit laminate flooring across the entire downstairs, as there are many benefits of doing so.
Expands open-plan areas
Most people love big open-plan living rooms these days, whether they expand their kitchen-diner or incorporate a play zone into their cooking area so they can keep an eye on their kids while preparing dinner.
Instead of dividing these areas with different flooring, it is a good idea to make the space look even bigger and brighter by having continuous flooring throughout.
Wooden or laminate floor is the ideal choice, as it looks great in both living rooms and kitchens. Therefore, there will be a seamless transition from one part of the room to the other.
Makes downstairs easier to clean
Downstairs floors take a bit of a beating, whether it’s in the kitchen where foods and drinks are often spilled, or the hallway where pawprints or welly boots leave muddy marks.
Even in the lounge there is a risk of juice or wine being tipped over, food crumbs spreading everywhere, and paint, playdoh or glitter making a mess on the floor.
While spillages and debris can be very difficult to get out of carpets, they are far easier to remove from laminate or vinyl flooring. Particles, such as popcorn, beads or dried mud, can be swept up without imbedding into the fibres of the floor.
At the same time, stains from wet shoes, coffee spills or paint pots can be wiped away before they cause any damage.
If you have a busy family and mess is part of your everyday life, getting rid of the carpet downstairs could save you a considerable amount of time trying to keep the house clean and stain-free.
More economical
As the same flooring is used throughout the entire downstairs, this can work out a lot cheaper than having different types of flooring in every room.
What’s more, if you want to make each area distinct, you can simply do this by adding a rug. Then if you fancy an interior design change, all you have to do is change the rug, which is a lot less expensive than replacing the whole floor.
Carpets are no longer on trend
Another reason to get laminate throughout your downstairs is that having carpet is not as stylish as it once was.
While it used to be seen in every living room, bedroom, and even bathroom, many homeowners prefer wooden or laminate floors these days.
Interior design expert Carla Chases told Ideal Home: “I think a wooden floor with rugs would be a preferable choice 90 per cent of the time.”
She added: “Wood is timeless, naturally warm underfoot and can work equally well in a living room with the use of rugs as much as in a utility room.”
However, carpets still have their place upstairs, as it makes the rooms feel cosy and warm, which is what you want from your bedrooms.
